Hair removal - Further information

Background knowledge on hair growth

Hair fashion

According to the ideal of beauty in the western world, most women tend to remove hair from certain areas of the body, such as

  • the legs
  • the bikini line
  • the armpit area
  • the chin and
  • on the upper lip.

For men, discreetly sprouting body hair is perceived as aesthetically pleasing to a certain extent. However, there is also a trend towards hair removal among men, particularly in the chest, underarm and back areas. This is not just for aesthetic reasons - thick hair also interferes with sport and sweating.

Causes of excessive hair

A pathological cause of excessive hair growth must be ruled out in each individual case. Particularly pronounced or rapidly developing hair suggests such a cause. If women develop menstrual disorders at the same time, it is advisable to look for the cause.

Possible causes include

In most cases, excessive hair growth is not pathological, but inherited. There is only a congenital increased androgen sensitivity of the hair follicles, but no demonstrable increase in androgen production.

Hair growth cycle

The hair follicle (located deep in the skin) is the structure responsible for hair growth. Hair goes through phases of growth and shedding with its follicular cycle.

During such a growth cycle, a distinction is made between

  • the actual growth phase (= anagen phase),
  • the subsequent atrophy phase (catagen phase) and
  • the phase of loss (telogen phase).

The duration of the individual cycle phases depends on the anatomical localization in which hair growth takes place. The hair follicles in an area are not synchronized, i.e. they are in different stages of the growth cycle at the same time.

In a healthy state, the three phases are naturally balanced in their duration.

What methods of depilation are there?

A variety of depilation and depilatory methods are available for removing hair.

  • Depilation is the removal of only the visible part of the hair (shaving, depilatory cream).
  • Depilation, on the other hand, involves removing the hair from the hair follicle. In temporary depilation, the hair is removed without destroying the hair root, which is why the hair can grow back with a certain latency. With permanent depilation, the hair root is also destroyed.

Depilation methods for hair removal

Shaving is the best known and quickest method of hair removal. Men in particular use daily beard shaving. The hair is cut off directly at the surface of the skin. With modern razors, the risk of cutting yourself is very low.

The disadvantage of shaving is that it has to be repeated every few days, depending on the area of the body. The regrowth can "look" thicker over time, as the fine tips are cut when shaving. However, the hair diameter does not change measurably.

Depilatory creams (chemical depilatories) usually contain substituted mercaptans, 2 to 10 percent thioglycolates mixed with 2 to 6 percent caustic soda. The chemicals are supplied in the form of

  • pastes,
  • creams or
  • lotions

applied to the skin. They break down the hair directly on the surface of the skin, which in turn can lead to skin irritation. Local redness or a "rash" can be the result.

To avoid skin irritation over a large area, you can test the cream on a small area first. If no skin irritation has occurred after 48 hours, you tolerate the product well.

Applying the creams is painless. The effect lasts for up to 14 days.

Options for "permanent" hair removal

Permanent hair removal is defined as hair-free for more than three months.

Common procedures are

  • Laser therapy: The alexandrite and ruby lasers in particular are very suitable for treating unwanted hair growth.
  • Treatment using IPL (Intense Pulsed Light, high-energy flash lamp): These relatively newly developed devices often show excellent results after treating unwanted hair several times. They are also particularly suitable for the facial area.
  • Hair removal with wax: The unwanted hair is "pulled out" by pulling on the hardened wax mass. Many people find this treatment option quite painful.

Repeated treatments for "permanent" hair removal

Multiple treatments are always necessary when treating with laser or IPL. The hairs are always in different growth phases, but they only respond to treatment in one phase, the anagen phase.
