Various hair transplant techniques are available to conceal the bald patches on the head. A hair transplant is usually performed on an outpatient basis under local anesthesia or general anesthesia and takes around 2 to 4 hours. The cost of a hair transplant starts at 4000 euros.

Causes of hair loss

Around 12 to 15 million Germans are prone to progressive baldness due to hereditary hair loss. Baldness often begins between the ages of 17 and 30. Many of those affected therefore suffer considerably from this predisposition.

90 percent of all hair loss is due to so-called "alopecia androgenetica", i.e. male pattern hair loss. It occurs in both men and women, although women are significantly less affected. They also have a different appearance.

In men, hair loss begins in the "receding hairline" and in the tonsure at the back of the head. It later spreads over the entire top of the head.

In women, there is usually a more diffuse general thinning of the entire head of hair. However, only a loss of more than 50 percent of the hair is really noticeable. Certain male hormones that everyone carries are responsible for this hair loss. In women, these hormones are balanced out by female hormones before the menopause.

The remaining 10 percent of all hair loss is due to internal illnesses or deficiencies.

Other causes of hair loss are

  • Accident and burn injuries or
  • scarring after cosmetic procedures, such asfacelifts or similar.

    Procedure for a hair transplant

Hair transplants can be used to conceal bald patches and progressive balding.

    The reduction

In some cases, the scalp is very flexible. In this case, the surgeon can cut out part of the bald area and stitch the remaining hairy area together.

A fine scar usually remains at the suture site. This can later be covered by a hair transplant.

    Autologous hair transplantation

A prerequisite for hair transplantation of your own hair is a sufficiently hairy, healthy head of hair. In most cases, men with progressive baldness retain this until the end of their lives.

Under local anesthesia and possibly under sedation, a thin strip of hair is removed from the hairline. The donor site is finely sutured and is no longer visible due to the overlying hair. The visual effect of the hair crown is not affected by the hair transplant.

    Methods of hair transplantation

There are three techniques with which the surgeon can create openings in the scalp. They are also painless for the patient due to the local anesthetic.

    Slitting

Very fine slits are cut into the scalp using special scalpels or needles.

Advantage: The grafts (transplants) "sit" relatively tightly in their receiving openings. This ensures a good supply of nutrients. Blood circulation is also comparatively little affected by the "slitting".

Disadvantage: The pressure of the scalp can push the implanted hair pieces out again.

    Punching or drilling

Using a drill or a hollow punch, pieces of tissue are drilled out of the skin.

Advantage: By removing the numerous small areas of skin, the bald area is reduced and hairy skin is used instead.

Disadvantage: The wound area is considerably larger, scarring is increased and healing takes longer.

    Laser

The doctor uses focused light instead of a scalpel or drill. This allows him to create tiny openings by vaporizing tissue.

Advantage: scarring is minimal and healing is therefore favorable. Bleeding is significantly reduced by the laser, which facilitates and therefore accelerates the insertion of the grafts. This further increases the already high survival rate of the transplants.

Disadvantage: The laser is only an efficient instrument in experienced hands. Once all the recipient channels have been created using one of the aforementioned techniques, the micro grafts are inserted into the channels using the finest tweezers.

    After the hair transplant

The day after the hair transplant, a follow-up examination with a medical hair wash is carried out. A few days later, there is practically no sign of the procedure. Depending on the hair type, new hair growth begins after around three to four months.

The hair then grows back normally at a rate of about one centimeter per month.

Risks and complications of a hair transplant

Hair transplantation is the most frequently performed operation for men. At the same time, it is very low-risk.

However, as with any operation, there can be complications. The scalp often becomes inflamed, making it difficult for individual transplanted hair islands to grow in. Aesthetic failures can also occur due to less experienced surgeons.
