Christian Gauck has been working at the Helios ENDO Clinic Hamburg since autumn 2016. With this valuable addition, the hospital has gained a senior physician who has an excellent reputation as a specialist in endoprosthetics and foot surgery – and a high degree of empathy as a passionate specialist.
As a specialist in orthopedics and trauma surgery, rheumatology and physical medicine, Dr. Christian Gauck focused early on a special field: It is the foot in all its aspects that fascinated him early on. Whether forefoot, metatarsus or hindfoot - the senior consultant is one of the specialists in this field in the entire German-speaking area.
What inspired Dr. Gauck early on was the enormous versatility of our feet: they keep us moving - and in balance. In fact, there are more sensory cells in our feet than in our faces. There are 26 bones connected by sixty muscles, over a hundred ligaments and 214 tendons via the joints. As the lowest point of the body, they are susceptible to injuries, pain or malpositions.
First-class expertise: Experienced foot specialist
Thanks to his professional expertise, the Helios ENDO Clinic in Altona gained in reputation. No wonder, as the renowned specialist in endoprosthetics and foot surgery is in demand for joint preserving operations in the areas of foot and ankle surgery, but also for all other joints. Dr. Gauck is also an experienced surgeon in shoulder and elbow joint surgery.
The accomplished orthopedist with extensive experience also adds another field to the joint surgery team of the clinic in Hamburg as a first-class specialist: During his surgical training, Dr. Gauck also focused on rheumatism orthopedics and the endoprosthetics of small and large joints.
Another special field: Endoprosthetics
If, for example, arthrosis symptoms occur at the upper ankle joint, an endoprosthesis that preserves movement may be the right choice. However, Dr. Christian Gauck attaches great importance to a thorough examination of the foot first - only then the individual surgical steps are planned if necessary. After all, the aim of the foot surgery is to regain the statics of the foot.
Before joining the joint surgery team, Dr. Christian Gauck worked for ten years as senior physician at the Tabea Hospital. He completed his specialist training at the hospitals of Barmbek and Eilbek. But he was not content with that: he acquired further special training in rheumatism orthopedics and physical therapy.
In 2007, Dr. Gauck interrupted his position as senior physician for half a year. He had been awarded the International Arthroplasty Fellowship by the German Society for Orthopedics and Orthopedic Surgery. He spent six months at the Harvard Medical School in Boston, where he continued to specialize in joint surgery at world level.
High empathy as family heritage
Dr. Gauck grew up in the GDR - as the son of a pastor who would later become Federal President of Germany. The family was known for its critical attitude to the political system, which is why he was refused admission to medical school. That's why Christian Gauck initially trained as an orthopedic technician - he was interested in feet even then. However, he had to end his qualification as a master orthopedic technician due to his application to leave the country.
In 1987 he was allowed to leave the country with his wife and children. In Hamburg he was finally able to fulfil his dream: From 1988 he studied medicine and was able to start working as a doctor in 1995.
However, his orthopedic skills still enrich his daily practice as a specialist in orthopedics and trauma surgery, rheumatology and physical medicine. His technical training and the associated knowledge of orthopedic technology also make him the ideal partner for working with orthopedists and general practitioners.
So if patients want to be sure that they are receiving detailed information on all treatment options, Dr. Gauck is the right person for them: He knows when a conservative method makes sense - and when surgical intervention is necessary. His special training in rheumatology gives him the additional authority to treat all rheumatically affected joints surgically.
Dr. med. Christian Gauck does not only rely on a highly competent team of doctors and nurses. He also benefits from the infrastructure of a special clinic for bone, joint and spine surgery, in which more than 7,000 joint surgeries are performed every year. This is also typical for the extraordinary physician Dr. Gauck: For him, the interdisciplinary exchange among colleagues and in the international professional world plays a very important role.
