Dr. med. Tomislav Kovačević

The medical career of Dr. med. Tomislav Kovačević began with his studies in medicine in his home country of Croatia, where he already laid the foundation for his specialization in pain therapy and anesthesiology. After successfully completing his degree, he expanded his expertise through a postgraduate program in neuroscience at the renowned Neurological Institute of McGill University in Montreal, Canada, where he focused intensively on neuropharmacology, particularly on the effects of psychotropic drugs in the treatment of depression. This work led him to earn his doctorate (Dr. scientiarum naturalium) and later to specialize in pain therapy. Upon his return to Europe, Dr. Kovačević completed his residency in anesthesiology at prestigious institutions such as the University Hospital Zagreb, the Charité in Berlin, and several German maximum-care hospitals. During this time, he developed a deep understanding of the complexity of pain therapy and acquired extensive knowledge of innovative methods of pain treatment. His work at the renowned Schmerzklinik Berlin was particularly formative for his clinical career. There, he specialized in minimally invasive pain management procedures aimed at significantly improving the quality of life for patients suffering from chronic pain conditions. His broad international experience eventually brought him to Switzerland, where he initially worked as a senior physician at the «Spitäler Schaffhausen». Here, he was able to further expand his knowledge in interventional pain therapy and refine his skills in applying state-of-the-art, patient-friendly treatment approaches. Dr. Kovačević is a member of the Swiss Society for Pain Medicine (SPS) as well as the Swiss Society for Interventional Pain Management (SSIPM), where he actively contributes to the development of new therapeutic methods and the implementation of innovative pain treatment protocols.

Since joining Schmerzklinik Zürich AG, which was acquired by the EPIONA Group in November 2023, Dr. Kovačević has played a central role in optimizing patient-centered care.
