Permanent make-up is the generic term for the permanent coloring of eyelids, eyebrows and lip contours. It also includes the application of beauty spots, the thickening of lash lines or the filling in of lip colors.

In contrast to other tattoos, cosmeticians apply the color less deeply into the skin with PMU. As a result, it is waterproof and smudge-proof and looks as if it has just been applied. It only has a limited shelf life of three to five years.
The challenge with removing permanent make-up is that many patients do not know which colors were used.
For this reason, patients should research the subject thoroughly beforehand. They should only place themselves in the hands of experienced specialists.

Even though UV rays break down pigments on facial skin much faster, there are many reasons to remove tattooed make-up prematurely:
- The most common motivation is that beautifying eyebrows, lips and the like does not deliver the desired results. Incorrect coloring, unclean execution or asymmetrical results make the face look mask-like. Failed PMUs are a psychological burden for those affected.
- Others have grown tired of their look or follow changing beauty ideals. While particularly thin eyebrows were popular for microblading a few years ago, today it is bushy, striking brows that are popular.
- But even if the permanent make-up meets expectations, some women have it removed prematurely as it fades unevenly. This is because the maturing process of the skin also changes the appearance of the permanent look. Frayed lines or blotchy areas are the result of natural skin ageing.
Caution is advised when correcting by camouflaging. If the PMU is botched, those affected want a quick solution. I
In desperation, correction is the method of choice. However, this only makes sense if cosmeticians enlarge the tattoos in the same color.
If practitioners cover unsightly areas with skin-colored pigments (camouflage), subsequent laser treatments are risky. In an attempt to put an end to the horror, the skin tone of covered areas often turns dark (color change).
Laser treatment is considered the most reliable method of PMU removal. Laser treatments effectively remove color pigments under the skin. Only specialist doctors have been allowed to carry out this form of treatment since 2021. There are a few things to bear in mind when using lasers. Specialists require different lasers depending on the color of the make-up.
During treatment, the laser heats the color pigments in a targeted manner so that they break down into smaller components. They are then so small that the body recognizes them as foreign substances and removes them via the lymphatic system. Expert laser treatment does not damage surrounding tissue and leaves no scars.
Most patients find laser treatment less painful. Therefore, anesthesia is not usually necessary.
Not every PMU can be removed equally well and completely.
The duration of the treatment therefore depends on
- Coloring
- Depth and
- Pigment density
On average, specialists require around three to ten sessions at intervals of four to eight weeks. Those affected therefore have to live with a half-finished result for a longer period of time, which is a burden.
Depending on how large the area is, the cost of treatment varies between 150 and 500 euros.
It ismore expensive if the specialist removes multi-colored tattoos. Various lasers with different wavelengths are used for this.
In reputable practices, a consultation and a trial treatment are free of charge. As most patients do not know exactly which color pigments were used, experts recommend a test treatment.
The specialist lasers a small area to test the reaction of the color used. This is done before the full treatment begins.
Dermatologists and cosmeticians also use applied fruit peels to remove permanent make-up. Fruit peels remove the top layer of skin and stimulate the epidermis to form new layers. However, this lengthy processdoes not guarantee complete removal.
With the remover technique, the make-up artist injects a solution under the skin that binds the color pigments and brings them to the skin's surface.
This treatment is only suitable for areas with sufficient distance to the eyes. It is therefore not advisable to remove eyeliner. However, this method reliably removes any color.
After the treatment, patients apply the doctor's care creams to the affected area.
Experts often advise patients to avoid sports, swimming pools and saunas in order to prevent infections and slow wound regeneration.
Lasered areas are sensitive to light. Light protection and headgear reliably ward off the sun's rays.
Removing permanent make-up is part of everyday life in many dermatology practices. When used correctly, the risk of burns and scarring is less than 4.5 percent.
Other risks are
- Release of carcinogenic components contained in colorants
- Color change, especially with white and skin-colored pigments
- Eye damage if the laser is not handled correctly
- Light coloration of other skin areas (hypopigmentation)
To remove PMU reliably, you should only consult experts. You should inform yourself extensively about possible treatment methods beforehand.
