About the clinic
New Department for Endocrine Surgery at Stadtklinik Hemer
With the launch of the new Department for Endocrine Surgery on June 1, 2025, DGD Stadtklinik Hemer is making a strong statement for highly specialized, cutting-edge medical care. Under the leadership of Dr. Siri Sophia Wiesmann and Prof. Dr. Ulrich Mittelkötter, the team offers comprehensive surgical treatment for diseases of the thyroid, parathyroid, adrenal glands, and neuroendocrine tumors of the pancreas (NET/pancreas). The focus is on highly precise, minimally invasive procedures and state-of-the-art intraoperative technology such as neuromonitoring.
Leading Expertise in Thyroid and Parathyroid Disorders
Dr. Wiesmann brings years of experience from a certified thyroid center and is a DEGUM-certified ultrasound specialist for precise diagnostics. Her expertise includes surgical treatment of benign thyroid nodules, Graves’ disease, thyroid cancer, and parathyroid adenomas (hyperparathyroidism). Prof. Mittelkötter complements the team with over 20 years of experience in endocrine tumor surgery and complex reoperations – particularly for adrenal and pancreatic diseases as well as MEN syndromes.
Center of Excellence for Rare Hormone-Active Tumors and Adrenal Surgery
The surgical treatment of hormonally active adrenal tumors such as pheochromocytomas, adenomas, or adrenal carcinomas is another core area of the department. In close collaboration with endocrinology, nuclear medicine, and oncology, the team offers individualized therapy plans for rare diseases. Complex findings in the pancreas are also safely diagnosed by the experienced surgical team – always using the latest technologies and in accordance with clinical guidelines. The department also maintains a close partnership with the Pancreas Center at Ruhr University Bochum, led by Prof. Dr. Waldemar Uhl, should surgical intervention be necessary.
Center for Endocrine Surgery with Regional Impact
The new department positions itself as a specialized center of excellence for endocrine surgery in South Westphalia and beyond. Combining academic excellence, modern facilities, and interdisciplinary tumor boards, Stadtklinik Hemer ensures patient-centered care at a university level. For patients, this means accurate diagnoses, tailored surgical procedures, and optimal long-term outcomes – delivered with compassion, expertise, and surgical precision.
