A tibial head fracture – also known as a fracture of the head of the tibia – is a serious injury to the knee joint and often occurs following falls from a great height or road traffic accidents. In this injury, the upper part of the tibia (shinbone) breaks close to the joint, which can lead to misalignment or permanent restrictions on movement. In addition to the bone injury, the menisci, ligaments and cartilage of the knee joint are often affected. Careful diagnosis using X-rays, CT or MRI scans, as well as early treatment by orthopaedic and trauma surgeons, are crucial to preventing complications and long-term consequences.
