About us Prof. Mag. Dr. med. Andreas Widschwendter

Prof. Andreas Widschwendter is a specialist gynaecologist in Innsbruck. Together with his activities as the Senior Surgical Gynaecology Consultant at the University Obstetrics and Gynaecology Hospital, he operates a private practice in Innsbruck.

Prof. Widschwendter focuses on surgical gynaecology. With over 10,000 surgical procedures over the last 15 years, he is among the most renowned gynaecological surgeons. He specialises in the field of minimally invasive surgery.

Minimally invasive surgical techniques include laparoscopy (abdominoscopy) and endoscopic examination of the uterine cavity (hysteroscopy).

With laparoscopy, the procedure is performed within the abdomen using a small camera. For this technique, only three small incisions, just a few millimetres in length, are necessary, whereby a large abdominal incision and thus a corresponding scar can be avoided. The advantages of this surgical technique are shorter surgery times, a shorter in-patient stay and more rapid recovery following surgery. The following procedures can be performed using this surgical technique: on the ovary (e.g. cysts), on the Fallopian tubes (e.g. tubal pregnancy), on the uterus (e.g. removal of a myoma), removal of the uterus (laparoscopic hysterectomy) or surgical procedures for endometriosis. As well, a minimally invasive diagnostic laparoscopy (e.g. for chronic lower abdominal pain), releasing adhesions, testing the patency of the Fallopian tubes (where the patient is trying to have a child) or the removal of the lymph nodes in the lesser pelvis can also be performed by means of laparoscopy (abdominoscopy).

Endoscopic examination of the uterine cavity (hysteroscopy) is used for diagnosis (assessment of the uterine cavity) and for treatment (removal of polyps, fibroids, adhesions).

Surgical procedures can be performed at the Kettenbruecke Sanatorium and at the University Hospital for Obstetrics and Gynaecology in Innsbruck.

The other treatment emphases in his private surgery include the diagnosis and treatment of HPV conditionsendometriosis and fibroids. The practice for gynecology of Prof. Andreas Widschwendter is a certified endometriosis center in Innsbruck/Tyrol.

Another focus of Prof. Widschwendter is the surgical treatment of cervical cancer (cervical carcinoma), uterine cancer (endometrial carcinoma) and cancer conditions of the external genitalia (vulval carcinoma). These procedures can frequently also be performed using minimally invasive techniques and hence the recovery phase following surgery can be shortened considerably.

Ongoing advanced training is the prerequisite for being able to offer the most effective, most gentle and most up to date surgical techniques. Based on his experience, Prof. Widschwendter trains and instructs other consultants and senior consultants in the latest surgical techniques. In addition, he is also a lecturer in the Master Class for minimally invasive surgery and gynaecological laparoscopy.

Prof. Widschwendter is also frequently called on for a second opinion and, in these cases, he is happy to care for the patient together with her attending gynaecologist. Here, he views the close collaboration with his colleagues as particularly important in order to be able jointly to achieve the best treatment possible for the patient.

Professor Andreas Widschwendter is a specialist in gynaecology and has attained a Master’s degree in Health Sciences. At the age of 33, eight years after his State Examination (Doctorate) in Human Medicine, he had already been named Professor of Gynaecology and Obstetrics.

His scientific emphases are HPV infection, surgical techniques in gynaecology and prognostic markers in gynaecological oncology.

Together with his teaching activities at the Medical University of Innsbruck, he is also a lecturer at the Midwife Academy.

Prof. Andreas Widschwendter is a member of the Board of Directors of the Colposcopy Working Group, a member of the Guidelines Committee for Cervical Pathology and a member of the Pharmaceuticals Committee of the Medical University of Innsbruck.

The private practice is operated as a group practice, together with Dr Susanne Jerabek-Klestil and Dr Rudolf Jerabek. Dr Susanne Jerabek-Klestil is a specialist in prenatal diagnostics and prenatal care. She holds OGUM Stage II, the highest possible training level of the Austrian Ultrasound Association for an established researcher. She also holds the international certification of the Fetal Medicine Foundation. Dr Rudolf Jerabek has many years experience as a specialist gynaecologist, and offers a wide range of services. As well as obstetrics and prenatal care (with over 1,000 private births at the Kettenbruecke Sanatorium), his special fields include breast diagnostics including breast ultrasound.

The emphases and the range of services complement each other perfectly at the group practice so that the entire diagnostic and therapeutic range of gynaecological services can be provided at the highest standard.
