Prof. Marc H. Jansen has been the Chief Physician of the Department of General, Abdominal and Minimal Invasive Surgery at the Helios Hospital in Berlin Zehlendorf since 2011. Previously, he worked as the Principal Consultant in the Department of General, Abdominal and Transplantation Surgery at the University Hospital in Aachen and is not only a specialist in surgery and abdominal surgery with additional qualification in special abdominal surgery and coloproctology (EBSQ) but is also a sought after expert in the field of pancreatic surgery. In his surgical department at the Helios Emil von Behring Hospital, he provides, together with his team, a wide range of treatment for surgical disorders with treatment focusing on cancer surgery to the organs of the gastrointestinal tract, endocrine surgery, hernia surgery and for benign conditions of the large intestine and the rectum. Here, the Department is certified both as an Intestinal Center and as the Southwest Berlin Center for Minimal Invasive Surgery. Above all, the treatment emphases of the Department include oncology surgery. Tumor conditions of the entire digestive region are addressed in interdisciplinary discussions with specialists from all involved specialist departments in weekly tumor conferences and individual treatment concepts are jointly developed taking current guidelines into account. Hence, the available treatment options (surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy) can be coordinated optimally in order to prevent limitations to the patient’s lifestyle following the conclusion of the treatment. Thanks to Prof. Jansen’s and his colleagues’ specialization in minimal invasive surgery, not only reflux, hernias and gallbladder conditions are surgically treated by means of these techniques. These techniques are also utilized for other affected organs such as the intestine, spleen and adrenal glands, and even for procedures on the liver and pancreas. This means a number of advantages for the patients: essentially a faster recovery with a lower risk of complications. This is also associated with the “Fast Track Rehabilitation” employed at the Helios Emil von Behring Hospital; this is a multimodal treatment concept with a range of mutually supportive measures. Close interdisciplinary collaboration between the Department of Gastroenterology and the Department of Abdominal Surgery also provides the best conditions for optimal and joint care, even of more complex clinical pictures. Prof. Jansen is a member of a various specialist associations, including the German Surgery Association, the German General and Abdominal Surgery Association and the International Gastric Cancer Association. The prognosis and prevention of malignant tumors in the abdomen are among his scientific emphases. In 2018, in a survey by the consumer magazine “Guter Rat” (“Good Advice”), Prof. Jansen was selected as one of the best physicians in his field among 300 medical colleagues nationwide.
