Problems with concentration, headaches, or neurological symptoms may also occur. Some patients additionally develop depressive moods or sleep problems. In children, celiac disease often affects growth and physical development. Stunted growth, being underweight, or noticeable fatigue are among the possible signs. Adults, on the other hand, more frequently develop nonspecific symptoms that cannot be clearly attributed to a specific cause for a long time. In addition, some patients experience symptoms outside the intestines.

These include, for example:

  • Osteoporosis
  • Neurological symptoms
  • Hormonal changes

  • Screening for nutritional deficiencies

It is particularly important not to eliminate gluten-containing foods on your own before diagnosis, as this can skew test results. The most important treatment is a long-term gluten-free diet. This can often lead to a significant reduction in intestinal inflammation.

Key components of the treatment are:

  • Nutritional counseling
  • Monitoring for nutrient deficiencies
  • Regular follow-up visits

A particularly strict diet plays a central role, as even small amounts of gluten can trigger inflammatory reactions again. Modern nutritional medicine is increasingly helping those affected to maintain a balanced diet despite dietary restrictions. In addition, research into new therapeutic approaches is becoming increasingly important. Scientists are currently investigating, among other things, ways to more specifically influence immune responses or stabilize the intestinal barrier.

Modern research is increasingly demonstrating how closely the immune system, gut microbiota, and chronic inflammatory processes are interconnected. This is precisely why early diagnosis, consistent dietary therapy, and long-term care play a vital role in health and quality of life. Older patients are also affected by celiac disease—in the context of geriatrics and geriatric medicine, special attention should be paid to the increased risk of osteoporosis in older adults.
