About us Professor Christoph A. Maurer, MD, FACS, FRCS, FEBS

Professor Christoph A. Maurer, MD, a renowned expert, is one of the most experienced surgeons in the field of abdominal surgery you will ever meet. He spent years of continuing education and training at internationally recognized surgical medical schools (Switzerland, Germany and USA), where he himself held executive positions. His experience as lead surgeon extends across 1600 hepatobiliary operations, 400 pancreatic operations, 4200 colorectal interventions, 1300 surgeries on the esophagus and stomach as well as more than 700 endocrine surgeries.

He is the founder and head of the Magendarmzentrum Aare (Gastrointestinal Center Aare). This is a network of acclaimed experts of all disciplines concerned with the intestines and the stomach. Thanks to the high levels of expertise and the close cooperation of the experts, patients benefit tremendously. Mr Maurer works at the Private Practice Obach in Solothurn. He is also an affiliated doctor at Beau-Site Clinic in Bern. The clinic is part of the renowned, privately owned hospital group Hirslanden. With the Department of Visceral Surgery, Beau-Site Clinic houses one of the two most important non-universitary Centers in the Mittelland region.

Professor Maurer's curriculum vitae reveals his intense interest in complex surgeries and surgical oncology on the aforementioned organs. He accordingly has earned numerous certifications and titles, among others, European specialization in complex hepatic, pancreatic and biliary surgery as well as in surgical oncology (EBSQ HPB and EBSQ Surg Oncol). Beyond this, innumerable international publications are testimony to his innovations and drive to promote surgical progress, particularly with regard to the postoperative quality of life for all patients (see list of publications).

In a prospective study liver surgery specialist Prof. Maurer and his team revealed that a major liver resection not only can be carried out safely without Pringle maneuver, but also can reduce the risk of further liver damage and failure. Read the details of his study, which was published in August 2016 in World Journal of Hepatology: Christoph A. Maurer u.a., Liver resections can be performed safely without Pringle Maneuver.

Moreover, his surgical mortality rates and the long-term outcomes of this tumor surgeries performed on the abdomen stand up effortlessly to every comparison with the published data of other leading hospitals worldwide. Many surgeries are performed minimally invasively (i.e., endoscopically and thus through very small skin incisions).

Often, patients from Switzerland and abroad come to us to obtain a second option. For example, patients who want to know whether their tumor is truly inoperable, whether their anal sphincter really has to be sacrificed or whether there is any better option for improving their quality of life. Extensive expertise is available especially in coloproctology (branch of surgery dealing with the large intestine, rectum, anus), also in revision surgeries to treat unsatisfactory outcomes performed elsewhere.

Our strengths include - alongside a minimal complication rate - holistic patient care that gets all required medical disciplines involved at the earliest possible stage. During interdisciplinary conferences, an individualized optimal therapeutic strategy is designed and recommended to all patients with a complex condition. Not only do our patients benefit from the expertise of our surgeons, but also from that of our affiliated gastroenterologists, radiologists, pathologists, oncologists and radiotherapists. In decision making, the quality of life to be expected is given paramount importance. The patient's wishes play a pivotal role.

Patients will encounter an ultra-modern infrastructure. The entire range of diagnostic and therapeutic equipment and devices is available or easily accessible.
