Dr Dietmar Wietholt heads the Department of Internal Medicine – Cardiology, Pneumonology and Internistic Intensive Care Medicine of the Asklepios Hospital in Wandsbek as its Senior Consultant. He has been honoured by the German Cardiology Association for his comprehensive expertise in cardiology with the certificates for Interventional Cardiology and Special Rhythmology.
The emphases of the department are the diagnosis and treatment of pulmonary and cardiovascular conditions, as well as tumour conditions of the associated organs. Here, the implantation of cardiac pacemakers or implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICD) for the treatment of cardiac arrhythmias is a frequently applied standard technique with a long tradition within the department.
Dr Wietholt and his team treat around 6,500 in-patients and 16,000 out-patients per year. The clinical pictures vary greatly and extend from high blood pressure to reduced pulmonary capacity, cardiac arrhythmias (with or without loss of consciousness), cardiac insufficiency and pulmonary tumours, and to emergencies such as cardiac infarctions or pulmonary embolisms. The department’s beds are arranged in four wards, as well as in the Central Casualty Department and the Chest Pain Unit.
The Chest Pain Unit has an emergency cardiac catheter service on 24-hour call. Hence, it is the first port of call for patients with chest pain, acute dyspnoea and impending cardiac infarction; here, the capable medical practitioners of the Department of Internal Medicine are able to respond immediately, make a diagnosis and can frequently even perform the initial intensive care treatment.
In addition to the cardiac catheter, other effective diagnostic techniques are employed, including pulmonary inspection (bronchoscopy) and inspection of the chest cavity (thoracoscopy), with the aid of which fluid can also be aspirated or tissue biopsies can be taken in the same treatment step. Foreign bodies or tumour tissue biopsies can also frequently be removed during this type of inspection.
