Prof. Dr. med. Pantelis Stavrinou ist Direktor der Neurochirurgie am Metropolitan Hospital in Athen. Seine besondere Expertise liegt in der operativen Behandlung komplexer Hirn- und Schädelbasistumoren, insbesondere von Gliomen, Meningeomen und Vestibularisschwannomen (Akustikusneurinomen). Über Prof. Dr. med. Pantelis Stavrinou
Prof. Dr. med. Pantelis Stavrinou ist Direktor der Neurochirurgie am Metropolitan Hospital in Athen und auf die operative Behandlung komplexer Erkrankungen des Gehirns, der Schädelbasis und der Wirbelsäule spezialisiert. Besondere Schwerpunkte seiner klinischen und wissenschaftlichen Tätigkeit sind die Neuroonkologie, die Hirntumorchirurgie und die Schädelbasischirurgie.
Zu seinem Behandlungsspektrum gehören insbesondere Meningeome, Gliome und Glioblastome, Hirnmetastasen, Vestibularisschwannome (Akustikusneurinome) sowie weitere Tumoren des Gehirns und der Schädelbasis. Bei der Planung neurochirurgischer Eingriffe stehen eine individuell abgestimmte Tumorbehandlung und der bestmögliche Erhalt wichtiger neurologischer Funktionen im Mittelpunkt. Abhängig von Art, Größe und Lage des Tumors kommen moderne mikrochirurgische, endoskopische und funktionserhaltende Operationsverfahren zum Einsatz.
Mitwirkung an den europäischen Behandlungsstandards
Eine besondere wissenschaftliche Expertise besitzt Prof. Stavrinou in der Behandlung von Meningeomen und Vestibularisschwannomen. Als Co-Autor europäischer Leitlinien der European Association of Neuro-Oncology (EANO) war er an der Erarbeitung der internationalen Empfehlungen zur Diagnostik und Behandlung dieser Erkrankungen beteiligt; diese Arbeiten wurden unter anderem in Lancet Oncology und in Neuro-Oncology veröffentlicht. Für Patientinnen und Patienten bedeutet dies, dass die Behandlung von einem Operateur geplant wird, der an der Formulierung genau jener Standards mitgewirkt hat, an denen sie gemessen wird. Behandlungsentscheidungen werden entsprechend anhand der publizierten Evidenz und im interdisziplinären Tumorboard getroffen.
Ausbildung und langjährige Tätigkeit in Deutschland
Prof. Stavrinou hat einen wesentlichen Teil seiner neurochirurgischen Laufbahn in Deutschland absolviert. Nach einem Fellowship für Kinderneurochirurgie am LMU-Klinikum Großhadern in München und einem Fellowship an der Medizinischen Hochschule Hannover war er von 2011 bis 2020 Oberarzt an der Klinik für Allgemeine Neurochirurgie der Universitätsklinik Köln unter Prof. Dr. R. Goldbrunner, einem der führenden neuroonkologischen Zentren Europas.
Schädelbasischirurgie
Ein weiterer zentraler Schwerpunkt ist die Schädelbasischirurgie. Operationen in diesem anatomisch besonders anspruchsvollen Bereich erfordern große Erfahrung, da Tumoren in unmittelbarer Nähe zu Hirnnerven, wichtigen Blutgefäßen und funktionell bedeutsamen Strukturen liegen. Seine langjährige Spezialisierung auf diesem Gebiet zeigt sich auch in seiner Lehrtätigkeit: Prof. Stavrinou leitete den Cologne International Skull Base Course und unterrichtet seit 2015 am Athens Skull Base Course; in beiden Kursen werden Neurochirurginnen und Neurochirurgen aus der ganzen Welt in den anatomischen Zugangswegen der Schädelbasischirurgie ausgebildet.
Operationstechnik im Dienst des Funktionserhalts
In der Tumorchirurgie setzt Prof. Stavrinou die exoskop-assistierte Mikrochirurgie ein, bei der ein hochauflösendes dreidimensionales Digitalsystem an die Stelle des klassischen Operationsmikroskops tritt, sowie das intraoperative Neuromonitoring, mit dem die Funktion der motorischen und sensiblen Bahnen während der Tumorentfernung fortlaufend überwacht wird. Bei Tumoren in funktionell bedeutsamen Hirnarealen kommt die Wachkraniotomie mit intraoperativer Sprach- und Motorikkartierung zum Einsatz, bei hochgradigen Gliomen zusätzlich die fluoreszenzgestützte Resektion mit 5-ALA. Ziel aller dieser Verfahren ist dieselbe Frage, die für Patientinnen und Patienten im Vordergrund steht: wie viel Tumor sich entfernen lässt, ohne Sprache, Bewegung, Sehen und Hören zu beeinträchtigen.
Wirbelsäulenchirurgie
Neben der Hirn- und Schädelbasischirurgie verfügt Prof. Stavrinou über besondere Qualifikationen in der spinalen Neurochirurgie und der minimalinvasiven Wirbelsäulenchirurgie. Dazu zählen die perkutane und minimalinvasive Bandscheibenchirurgie an Hals- und Lendenwirbelsäule, die minimalinvasive Stabilisierung einschließlich Spondylodese mit Cage, die Kyphoplastie bei Wirbelkörperfrakturen sowie die mikrochirurgische Behandlung von Rückenmarks- und Wirbelsäulentumoren. Seine Qualifikation auf diesem Gebiet ist durch das Spine Master Diploma der Deutschen Wirbelsäulengesellschaft (DWG) belegt.
Wissenschaft und Lehre
Prof. Stavrinou hat mehr als einhundert Arbeiten in peer-reviewten Fachzeitschriften veröffentlicht; sein h-Index beträgt 29 bei über 4.600 Zitierungen. Seine Promotion befasste sich mit der Expression von Enzymen und Genen, die am Metabolismus von Chemotherapeutika in Hirntumoren beteiligt sind — mit der Frage also, warum dasselbe Medikament bei der einen Patientin wirkt und beim anderen Patienten nicht. 2020 wurde er an der Universität zu Köln habilitiert (Privatdozent), 2025 zum Professor für Neurochirurgie an der University of Nicosia ernannt. Für seine wissenschaftliche Arbeit erhielt er zwei erste Forschungspreise der Hellenic Neurosurgical Society sowie eine Honourable Mention beim EANS Research Prize in Oxford.
