Prof. Dr Bockhorn's clinical focus is on oncological surgery, in particular minimally invasive surgery for tumours of the liver, gall bladder, pancreas, stomach and oesophagus. His translational research focuses on the role of inflammation in tumour development and the development of resistance to chemotherapy. Together with partners from the industry, he is working on the development of polymer structures to stop leaks, for example. Prof. Dr Bockhorn is also an active member of various international professional associations, including the Board of the European - African Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association (E-AHPBA), the International Study Group of Pancreatic Surgery (ISGPS) and the European Surgical Association (ESA). These memberships emphasise his international recognition and networking in the medical world.
Under the leadership of Prof. Dr Bockhorn, the Oldenburg Hospital has made significant progress in medical care. Particularly noteworthy is the Centre for Interdisciplinary Robotic Surgery (ZIRCOL), which was founded on his initiative. The hospital also operates a telemedicine centre with 24/7 availability to ensure continuous telemedical care. The University Clinic for General and Visceral Surgery is characterised by highly qualified surgery that favours minimally invasive procedures and low-pain techniques in order to preserve and restore organ function. Patients benefit considerably from these advanced approaches, making the clinic a leading facility in the entire region.
