Located in the heart of Bielefeld's old town, the barrier-free practice combines the advantages of a state-of-the-art surgical clinic with the friendly and welcoming atmosphere of a doctor's surgery. The quality of the practice and the work of the medical staff was awarded the highest rating following the official certification process (DIN ISO 9001) in 2015.

The practice has a full range of surgical equipment as well as radiological and sonographic diagnostic technology. Every year we perform over 2000 surgical procedures under general or local anesthesia. In doing so, we cooperate with numerous other specialists, medical associations and sports clubs.

One focus of the practice is the surgical treatment of hernias, such as inguinal, umbilical and incisional hernias. We use all typical open surgical procedures and are guided by the latest research. As part of the Herniamed quality assurance study, all procedures and details of the findings are extensively documented and subjected to scientific evaluation. In this way, we help to ensure that the methods of hernia therapy continue to improve in the future.

Kay Winkelmann, a specialist in surgery, has been a practicing surgeon since 2004 and therefore has many years of experience as a competent surgeon in the successful treatment of all types of hernias. Prior to this, he completed several internships and training courses, including at clinics and specialist centers in Los Angeles and Houston, and was thus able to directly apply different methods with a view to international comparison.

Dr. Frank Kappel is a specialist in surgery with a focus on visceral surgery. He has several years of experience as a senior surgeon at Bielefeld Hospital before joining our practice clinic as the second owner, thus contributing to your optimal treatment with his surgical expertise

An abdominal wall hernia is usually treated by implanting a plastic mesh to stabilize the weak point in the abdominal wall. In some cases or in very young patients, the abdominal wall is surgically tightened instead in order to close the hernia. We routinely perform both procedures in our practice clinic.
We have been working successfully in the fields of surgery, trauma surgery, orthopedics and sports medicine since 2004, and as the Winkelmann & Kappel joint practice since 2015.
