About us

Thanks to the dedication of the Oskar-Helene Home in 1914 and with its establishment as an orthopedic hospital with a nationally outstanding reputation, the Department of Orthopedics and Trauma Surgery can today point to successful clinical work and long-standing tradition. With established and, at the same time, successful innovative treatment techniques in conservative, surgical and rehabilitative treatment for orthopedic disorders and in the care of accident victims, the Department of Orthopedics and Trauma Surgery forms a crucial center at the Emil von Behring Hospital in Berlin-Zehlendorf. The new Chief Physician, Dr. Akos Zahar, came to Berlin from the ENDO Clinic in Hamburg in 2018 in order further to expand endoprosthetics in Zehlendorf. Thanks to this change in personnel, the Department of Orthopedics at the Behring Hospital has taken its specialized bearings from the ENDO Clinic in Hamburg. Optimized procedures, reliable implants with excellent long-term results, standardized surgical techniques, high quality demands and an efficient care pathway contribute to the satisfaction of the patients. As a center for joint medicine and spinal surgery, the Department focuses its treatment on degenerative changes (osteoarthritis) of the large joints, such as the hip, knee and shoulder. The second important area of the treatment range is spinal surgery by certified specialists. The third pillar is formed by trauma surgery, with out-patient and in-patient care of accident victims, including D-type techniques. State-of-the-art surgical treatment by the implantation of an endoprosthesis (artificial joint) is performed using the established bone-conserving and muscle-protecting surgical techniques. One crucial focus of the Department is revision endoprosthetics (revision artificial joint surgery) of large joints due to mechanical failure or a malfunction. A new focus since 2018 is the diagnosis and treatment of periprosthetic infection. The profile of the Department also includes joint-maintaining surgical procedures on the muscular skeletal system for acquired malposition and growth disorders for the prevention of accelerated joint wear. Both open surgical and arthroscopic (joint inspection) surgical techniques are utilized in addition to the entire spectrum of arthroscopy-guided techniques for cartilage- and joint-associated ligament injury. The Helios Emil von Behring Hospital is approved for the administration of treatment for specific types of injury (VAV) and is a Hospital Centre for trauma surgery. The Emergency Center, staffed 24 hours per day, is a treatment and admission center for patients with acute conditions and injuries, which enables interdisciplinary competence and collaboration in addition to the care of accident victims with complex injury patterns.
