Dr. Akil began his specialist training in 2013 as a junior doctor in the Department of Cardiac Surgery and Thoracic Surgery at Münster University Hospital. There, he completed his basic training in the field of surgery and specialized in cardiac and thoracic surgery. After subsequently working at the Clinic for Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery at Essen University Hospital, he continued his career at the renowned Clinic for Thoracic Surgery and Pulmonary Support in Ibbenbüren in 2016. As a senior physician at this leading institution, he not only took on responsibility for patient care, but also for scientific work. Here, he headed up clinical and experimental research, thereby expanding the knowledge and application of modern thoracic surgical procedures. A particular focus of his work is on extracorporeal lung support (ECMO), a life-saving procedure that offers new treatment options to patients with severely impaired lung function. Dr. Akil has extensive experience in this field and has successfully established the procedure at various clinics. Under his leadership, this technology was not only used for patients with acute respiratory failure, but was also introduced as an adjunctive procedure for complex operations on patients with advanced COPD and lung cancer. This has significantly increased the safety and range of treatments in thoracic surgery.
In addition to ECMO technology, Dr. Akil covers a broad spectrum of thoracic surgical procedures. This includes diaphragmatic surgery for malpositions, the treatment of chest injuries including reconstructions of the thoracic wall as well as extensive thoracic wall procedures. His specialist knowledge and surgical precision make him an expert in this field. Innovative developments are also being advanced under his leadership. In addition, Dr. Akil is working closely with colleagues in pneumology to establish a lung cancer center. Dr. Akil is not only an outstanding physician, but also a dedicated scientist and innovator who has made a significant impact on thoracic surgery through his expertise and visionary work.
