Univ.-Prof. Dr. med. Christian Lange

Since April 2026, the First Department of Medicine and Polyclinic at Mainz University Medical Centre has been headed by Professor Lange, an experienced hepatologist and transplant specialist. As a specialist in internal medicine, gastroenterology and hepatology, he has additional qualifications in transplant medicine, infectious diseases, nutritional medicine and drug-based tumour therapy. This broad expertise enables him to provide comprehensive care, even for complex diseases of the liver and digestive organs.

A particular focus of his clinical and scientific work is liver cirrhosis. Professor Lange deals extensively with advanced stages of the disease and severe complications of chronic liver diseases. Liver tumours and infectious liver diseases also form part of his proven area of expertise.

Professor Lange also brings particular experience in transplant medicine. Before moving to Mainz, he headed the Department of Hepatology and the Munich Liver Centre at LMU Hospital. His research focuses, amongst other things, on liver transplantation and innovative strategies for improving and regenerating donor organs – an example of the close link between research and patient care that characterises his medical approach.

Another recognised area of expertise for Professor Lange is gastrointestinal endoscopy. In particular, he has many years’ experience in the endoscopic diagnosis and treatment of biliary tract and pancreatic diseases (ERCP, endosonography).  

At Mainz University Medical Centre, Professor Lange aims in particular to further strengthen the departments of hepatology, endoscopy, gastrointestinal oncology and transplant medicine. Patients will benefit from the resources available at a university-affiliated tertiary care centre and from close interdisciplinary collaboration in the management of complex clinical conditions.
