Prof. Dr. med. Mohamed Zaatar is a recognized expert in the field of thoracic surgery and, since May 2025, has served as Chief Physician at the renowned Heckeshorn Lung Clinic at Helios Klinikum Emil von Behring in Berlin-Zehlendorf. With his solid training, many years of surgical experience, and international positions at leading clinics, Prof. Dr. Zaatar represents modern, patient-centered, and evidence-based lung and thoracic surgery. He brings a clear vision: combining highly precise, minimally invasive surgery with interdisciplinary collaboration to achieve the best possible treatment outcomes, particularly in oncological diseases such as lung cancer.
His medical expertise spans the full spectrum of thoracic surgery. The main focuses of his work include the surgical treatment of lung carcinomas, performing complex tumor resections using gentle techniques such as video-assisted thoracoscopy (VATS), as well as the surgical management of diseases of the mediastinum, trachea, and chest wall. Prof. Dr. Zaatar also has extensive experience in tracheal surgery, the treatment of inflammatory lung diseases, and thoracic traumatology. A special focus of his is the advancement of robotic-assisted surgical techniques to make procedures even safer and more precise.
As a board-certified thoracic surgeon with the European credential “Fellow of the European Board of Thoracic Surgery (FEBTS)” and additional qualifications in emergency medicine and specialized thoracic surgery, Prof. Dr. Zaatar combines surgical excellence with a comprehensive medical approach. Through his work at leading clinics—including the Ruhrlandklinik in Essen, the University Hospital Zurich, and the Evangelical Lung Clinic Berlin-Buch—he has gained a broad range of clinical experience and scientific expertise that now benefits him in his new role.
