However, in atrial fibrillation, these electrical impulses become disorganized. The atria suddenly beat very rapidly and erratically. As a result, the heart loses its normal rhythm and pumps less efficiently.

The most important risk factors include:

High blood pressure, in particular, places a significant long-term strain on the heart. The persistently elevated pressure causes changes in the heart muscle and atria, which increases the risk of arrhythmias. Metabolic disorders also play a greater role than previously thought. Obesity and diabetes simultaneously affect inflammatory processes, blood vessels, and heart function. In addition, recent studies show that chronic inflammatory processes can promote changes in heart tissue. This leads to so-called scarring in the atria, which further disrupts electrical signals.

Alcohol, lack of sleep, and thyroid disorders also influence the risk of atrial fibrillation. 

What Symptoms Are Typical

Symptoms vary significantly from person to person. Some patients experience severe symptoms, while others barely notice the arrhythmia.

Typical symptoms include, among others:

  • Heart palpitations
  • Heart fluttering
  • Shortness of breath
  • Dizziness
  • Fatigue
  • Reduced exercise tolerance

Many people with this condition describe a sudden irregular or rapid heartbeat. Some also experience restlessness or a feeling of pressure in the chest. Symptoms often become more severe, especially during physical activity. Shortness of breath or rapid exhaustion can sometimes develop even with minimal exertion. Additionally, atrial fibrillation often affects overall performance.

Due to the irregular heartbeat, the body is supplied with oxygen less efficiently. Some patients also experience dizziness or difficulty concentrating, especially when heart rate and blood pressure fluctuate significantly.

The problem is that atrial fibrillation can also be completely asymptomatic. Precisely because of this, the condition sometimes goes undiagnosed for a long time, even though an increased risk of stroke already exists. 

Why Atrial Fibrillation Increases the Risk of Stroke

One of the most significant complications of atrial fibrillation is the formation of blood clots within the heart. Due to the erratic movements of the atria, blood is no longer pumped evenly. As a result, blood can pool, particularly in the left atrium. Clots can form in this pooled blood. If these clots travel through the bloodstream to the brain, they may block blood vessels there and trigger a stroke. This is precisely why stroke prevention plays a central role in the treatment of atrial fibrillation.

An individual’s risk depends, among other factors, on:

  • Age
  • High blood pressure
  • Diabetes mellitus
  • Previous strokes
  • Heart failure

Modern medicine specifically evaluates these risk factors to select the appropriate treatment.

The diagnosis is usually made using an electrocardiogram, or ECG for short. Since atrial fibrillation sometimes occurs only intermittently, longer recordings are often necessary.

Treatment aims to achieve several goals simultaneously. The goal is to stabilize heart rhythm and heart rate and reduce the risk of stroke.

Modern treatment approaches include:

  • blood-thinning medications
  • Medications for rhythm control
  • catheter ablation
  • Treatment of risk factors

Prevention is important, especially when it comes to strokes. Blood-thinning medications reduce the risk of blood clots. Modern catheter procedures are becoming increasingly important. These procedures treat specific areas of heart tissue to reduce abnormal electrical signals. Lifestyle is also important. Weight loss, blood pressure control, exercise, and treatment of sleep disorders often have a positive impact on the course of the disease.
