About Prof. Pantelis Stavrinou, MD, PhD

Prof. Pantelis Stavrinou is Director of Neurosurgery at the Metropolitan Hospital in Athens and specialises in the surgical treatment of complex conditions affecting the brain, the skull base and the spine. His clinical and scientific work focuses in particular on neuro-oncology, brain tumour surgery and skull base surgery.

His range of treatments includes, in particular, meningiomas, gliomas and glioblastomas, brain metastases, vestibular schwannomas (acoustic neuromas) and other tumours of the brain and skull base. When planning neurosurgical procedures, the focus is on individually tailored tumour treatment and the best possible preservation of vital neurological functions. Depending on the type, size and location of the tumour, modern microsurgical, endoscopic and function-preserving surgical techniques are employed.

Contributing to European treatment standards

Prof. Stavrinou possesses particular scientific expertise in the treatment of meningiomas and vestibular schwannomas. As a co-author of European guidelines published by the European Association of Neuro-Oncology (EANO), he was involved in drawing up international recommendations for the diagnosis and treatment of these conditions; this work has been published in journals including *Lancet Oncology* and *Neuro-Oncology*. For patients, this means that their treatment is planned by a surgeon who has helped to formulate the very standards against which they are assessed. Treatment decisions are therefore made on the basis of published evidence and within the interdisciplinary tumour board.

Training and long-standing career in Germany

Prof. Stavrinou spent a significant part of his neurosurgical career in Germany. Following a fellowship in paediatric neurosurgery at LMU Großhadern Hospital in Munich and a fellowship at Hannover Medical School, he served as a Senior Consultant in Neurosurgery at Cologne University Hospital, one of Europe’s leading neuro-oncology centres, under Prof. R. Goldbrunner.

Skull base surgery

Another key area of specialisation is skull base surgery. Operations in this anatomically particularly challenging area require extensive experience, as tumours are located in close proximity to cranial nerves, major blood vessels and functionally important structures. His long-standing specialisation in this field is also reflected in his teaching activities: Prof. Stavrinou led the Cologne International Skull Base Course and has been teaching on the Athens Skull Base Course since 2015; both courses train neurosurgeons from around the world in the anatomical approaches to skull base surgery.

Surgical techniques aimed at preserving function

In tumour surgery, Prof. Stavrinou employs exoscopic-assisted microsurgery, in which a high-resolution three-dimensional digital system replaces the traditional surgical microscope, as well as intraoperative neuromonitoring, which continuously monitors the function of motor and sensory pathways during tumour removal. For tumours in functionally significant areas of the brain, awake craniotomy with intraoperative speech and motor mapping is used; for high-grade gliomas, fluorescence-guided resection with 5-ALA is also employed. The aim of all these procedures is to answer the very question that is of primary concern to patients: how much of the tumour can be removed without impairing speech, movement, vision or hearing.

Spinal surgery

In addition to brain and skull base surgery, Prof. Stavrinou has specialist qualifications in spinal neurosurgery and minimally invasive spinal surgery. These include percutaneous and minimally invasive disc surgery on the cervical and lumbar spine, minimally invasive stabilisation including spondylodesis with a cage, kyphoplasty for vertebral body fractures, and microsurgical treatment of spinal cord and spinal tumours. His expertise in this field is attested by the Spine Master Diploma awarded by the German Spine Society (DWG).

Research and teaching

Prof. Stavrinou has published more than one hundred papers in peer-reviewed journals; his h-index stands at 29, with over 4,600 citations. His doctoral thesis focused on the expression of enzymes and genes involved in the metabolism of chemotherapeutic agents in brain tumours — in other words, the question of why the same drug is effective in one patient but not in another. In 2020, he was awarded his habilitation (Privatdozent) at the University of Cologne, and in 2025 he was appointed Professor of Neurosurgery at the University of Nicosia. For his scientific work, he received two first-prize research awards from the Hellenic Neurosurgical Society, as well as an Honourable Mention at the EANS Research Prize in Oxford.

Combining neuro-oncology, brain tumour surgery, skull base surgery and minimally invasive spinal surgery, Prof. Stavrinou offers highly specialised neurosurgical expertise at the Metropolitan Hospital in Athens, drawing on many years of clinical experience in Germany and Greece as well as intensive scientific and academic work.
