About us

Dr. Dirk Guehlen is the Chief Physician of the Department of Trauma Surgery and Orthopedics at the Kitzingen Land Hospital in Kitzingen. He works in close collaboration with Dr. Philipp Blanke, Chief Physician of the Department of Trauma Surgery and Orthopedics at the Main Hospital in Ochsenfurt and with Dr. Norbert Gerhard and his colleagues from the Kitzingen Orthopedics Center. Between 2008 and 2018, the endoprosthetics specialists of the Kitzingen Land Hospital implanted approximately 2000 artificial hip, knee and shoulder joints. As a result of increasing age, outstanding endoprosthetic care for wear-related joint conditions is indispensable and the Kitzingen Land Hospital accepts this challenge and continues to extend its expertise. In a current health insurance company ranking, endoprosthetic treatment, particularly of the hip joint, is ranked as above average. A particular focus of the Kitzingen Land Hospital is revision endoprosthetics, i.e. replacement surgery following wear or loosening of an already previously implanted joint.

Revision surgery is frequently even more demanding than the initial endoprosthesis since the bony material still available, on the one hand, has already been stressed by the first surgery and, on the other hand, due to the frequently advanced age of the patients, this has naturally been further reduced. In addition, the patients often suffer from accompanying conditions such as diabetes and cardiac insufficiency, and so they tolerate a general anesthetic considerably less well. Dr. Guehlen and his team have maintained a longstanding, close and fruitful collaboration with the Kitzingen Orthopedics Center (headed by Dr. Norbert Gerhard) and, as of recently, also with the Main Hospital in Ochsenfurt (Dr. Philipp Blanke). Thanks to the pooling of expertise and capacities, Kitzingen has become established as a regional center for orthopedic problems and treatment. The experienced orthopedic specialists and surgeons maintain a close interchange and so the patient is able to derive benefit, not only from different hospital sites but also from the coverage of a wide range of services thanks to the numerous specialists on hand.
