At ETHIANUM Heidelberg, Prof. Dr. med. Jörg Holstein and Priv.-Doz. Dr. med. Philipp A. Michel combine their medical expertise in the fields of orthopedics and arthroplasty. For these two renowned specialists, the highest guiding principle is: The person comes first! Every patient brings different circumstances and therefore has different requirements for medical treatment. ETHIANUM Heidelberg provides Prof. Holstein and PD Dr. Michel with the setting that individualized medicine at the highest level requires: personal attention, sufficient time, and an environment that combines surgical excellence with the highest level of patient comfort. At the Center for Hip and Knee Arthroplasty, which they founded, they are able to focus entirely on their patients and offer them customized therapies. At the same time, Prof. Holstein and PD Dr. Michel serve as senior physicians at Salem Hospital Heidelberg, a teaching hospital of Heidelberg University, as well as at St. Josef Hospital Viernheim, where they are also able to treat patients with statutory health insurance.
Prof. Dr. med. Jörg Holstein is a specialist in orthopedics and trauma surgery and holds additional qualifications in specialized orthopedic surgery, specialized trauma surgery, hand surgery, manual medicine/chirotherapy, physical therapy and balneology, emergency medicine, and specialized radiologic diagnostics. As an internationally recognized specialist in minimally invasive and muscle-sparing hip arthroplasty, he is also a leading expert in the field of knee arthroplasty.
He gained his extensive experience and qualifications through collaboration with renowned experts in Europe and the United States, as well as through many years of work at Saarland University Medical Center in Homburg, where he most recently held a senior leadership position as Deputy Director of the Department of Trauma, Hand, and Reconstructive Surgery.
In addition to his medical work in patient care, Prof. Holstein trains German and international colleagues as an operating room instructor and consultant in the technique of minimally invasive hip arthroplasty (AMIS). Furthermore, Prof. Holstein is actively involved in numerous medical and scientific professional societies, where in some cases he holds leading positions and actively helps shape the development of the fields of orthopedics and surgery. His contribution to research, reflected in an extensive list of publications, has also reinforced Prof. Holstein’s outstanding reputation among his colleagues.
Priv.-Doz. Dr. med. Philipp A. Michel complements the center’s range of services as a distinguished specialist in knee and hip arthroplasty with many years of clinical experience and excellent academic qualifications. His particular expertise lies in robot-assisted knee arthroplasty using the CORI™ system, which enables highly precise, individually tailored, and tissue-sparing treatment of knee joints with partial and total joint replacements. In addition to primary and revision arthroplasty, PD Dr. Michel’s medical focus is on minimally invasive hip arthroplasty using the AMIS technique.
After studying medicine at Heidelberg University (Mannheim Medical Faculty), as well as completing a scholarship-funded degree in health economics at the Mannheim Institute of Public Health, PD Dr. Michel worked for many years at the Department of Trauma, Hand, and Reconstructive Surgery at University Hospital Münster, most recently as a senior attending physician and section head for arthroplasty. His clinical expertise is closely linked to scientific work and broad involvement in national professional societies, ensuring that current insights and developments are continuously incorporated into the treatment of his patients.
Through the combination of minimally invasive hip arthroplasty, high-quality implants, and robotic support for knee replacements, a standard of medical excellence is created that reflects the latest state of science while taking place in a calm, personal, and highly individualized environment. In this way, the Center for Hip and Knee Arthroplasty at ETHIANUM Heidelberg offers exceptional care for hip and knee disorders through the combination of many years of medical experience, state-of-the-art medical technology, and patient-centered care – from initial diagnostics and conservative and surgical treatment to aftercare and rehabilitation.
