About Prof. Dr. med. Christian Ewelt
At the beginning of 2024, Professor Dr. Christian Ewelt received the prestigious certification of the German Society for Neurosurgery (DGNC) for vascular neurosurgery, a rare and highly respected recognition that meets the highest standards in neurosurgery. This certification confirms the clinic as a center that focuses on high-risk neurosurgical procedures such as the treatment of brain aneurysms, vascular changes and severe neurovascular diseases. Prof. Ewelt's further special expertise lies in oncological neurosurgery and complex spinal surgery. With a broad background in the treatment of brain tumors, including highly specialized techniques such as fluorescence surgery, he relies on innovative procedures for the precise removal of tumors in the brain.
Prof. Ewelt also covers the entire spectrum of skull base surgery, including open and endoscopic procedures, and offers state-of-the-art treatment options for degenerative, tumorous and inflammatory diseases of the spine. As head of the Spine Center NRW, Dr. Ewelt is also responsible for the surgical and conservative treatment of herniated discs, spinal instabilities and tumor diseases of the spine. The neurosurgery clinic is certified as a spine specialist center by the German Spine Society (DWG) and offers its patients state-of-the-art procedures for stabilization and pain treatment, including minimally invasive techniques, endoscopy and navigated surgery with intraoperative CT. These technologies enable high-precision interventions that are as gentle as possible and thus guarantee optimal treatment with faster recovery.
As part of the Head and Trauma Center at the St. Barbara Clinic Hamm, the Department of Neurosurgery specializes in the treatment of complex, life-threatening injuries and illnesses. In close cooperation with the specialist departments of trauma surgery, hand surgery, ENT and ophthalmology, neurosurgery forms an important pillar in the treatment of seriously injured patients and ensures rapid, interdisciplinary care. The department holds regular tumor conferences at which specialists from neurosurgery, neuroradiology, oncology and radiotherapy come together to plan optimal, patient-specific treatment. As a maximum care hospital with fourteen specialist departments, the St. Barbara Clinic offers comprehensive and specialized care for over 23,000 inpatients and 75,000 outpatients. Under the management of Professor Christian Ewelt, the neurosurgery clinic has earned an excellent reputation far beyond the region and is regularly visited by patients from all over Germany.
