Prof. Drees has an unusually high level of expertise. He is not only a specialist in foot and ankle surgery, he has also specialized in hip, elbow and knee surgery - and in endoprosthetics, which he also performs at university level. He also has an impressive track record in pediatric orthopedics.
About the clinic
Professor Dr. med. Philipp Drees, specialist in orthopedics and trauma surgery, orthopedic rheumatology and special orthopedic surgery, has been the Head of the Department of Orthopedics and Rheumatic Orthopedics since 2014 and Director of the Center for Orthopedics and Trauma Surgery (ZOU) of the University Medical Center of the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz since April 1st, 2020. He was previously Clinic Director and Chief Physician of the Center for Trauma Surgery and Orthopedics at the Middle Rhine Foundation Hospital.
The diagnosis, treatment and follow-up treatment of all medical conditions and injuries of the musculoskeletal system are provided by a large number of highly specialized experts at the Center for Orthopedics and Trauma Surgery of the University Medical Center of the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz. Several departments with specific tasks, surgical techniques or patient characteristics have been defined, founded and certified by prestigious institutions (ClaCert, OnkoCert, iQCert, etc.).
Professor Philipp Drees’ clinical and scientific emphases are on the surgical and conservative treatment of inflammatory, degenerative and benign as well as malignant tumorous joint and spinal conditions, as well as revision surgery for these conditions. The fields of the diagnosis and treatment of metabolic bone conditions and geriatric medicine are also among his emphases. The entire range of conditions and injuries to the musculoskeletal system is treated at the highest standard, on an interdisciplinary basis.
Around 400,000 hip and knee endoprostheses are implanted in Germany annually. In 2017, Professor Drees initiated the PROMISE (PROcess optiMIzation by interdisciplinary and cross-SEctor care in patients with hip and knee endoprostheses) Project, with the objective of optimizing the quality of care for hip and knee endoprostheses, from the initial examination and the surgical procedure to the patient’s discharge from the hospital.
Gentler surgical techniques, better anesthetic techniques and more rapid patient mobilization contribute toward a speedier rehabilitation for patients and toward a more active involvement in their own recovery process and hence they also have a briefer period of hospitalization. The Center for Orthopedics and Trauma Surgery of University Medicine in Mainz is the first German University hospital to be able to call itself a “Rapid Recovery Hospital”.
